Chapter 10: Interlude – Simon’s Team

Nothing could stop Sergei from breaking into this stupid ski lodge on the cliffs of what looked like some part of Japan. He glanced up at Simon, rage fueling him at the thought that anyone else here might even have a shot at earning the ward money. This was his fight! Everyone, including Simon, needed to take a step back.

“Bring them to me,” Simon said, lifting one of his scythes to motion at the lodge.

“Wait,” Sergei interjected, stepping out ahead of the other kids. He held out his diamond sword—one of many presents given to him by Simon as a reward for choosing the billionaire’s side. Standing tall and enjoying the glares of envy the other kids shot his way, Sergei said, “Let me be the first. I’ll defeat them and bring those punks to kneel at your feet.”

Simon waved a hand dismissively. “You have five minutes. Go.”

“Wait, but that’s not fair—” a bratty boy named Ostrick said from nearby, and a girl named Illi started to protest as well, but one look from Simon with that scorpion tail flashing above his head shut them up.

Sergei turned and assessed the ski lodge, annoyed at the palm trees swaying in the wind past it. The sooner he could put an end to this, the sooner he would be able to get back to his old life of school and football. At first he thought it would be stupid to walk into their trap, but after a second’s thought he realized they were just stupid kids—what could they do against him? After all, he had been quarter back of his football team. He was awesome while they were nobodies.

With diamond sword held high, he charged the building. As he pushed them open, Sergei was immediately hit by a blast of cold air. The inside of the lodge was dark and eerie, creaking sounds causing his eyes to dart about. It was like a haunted house, but somehow even more eerie.

His footsteps echoed louder and louder the more he advanced. Sergei cautiously made his way through the lodge, his footsteps echoing off the walls. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching him, waiting for him to make a misstep. Suddenly, a floorboard creaked under his foot and he jumped back in fright.

A hard surface rose up to slam him in the back, and he turned to see no sign of anyone there—just the table. He braced himself for a fight, only to find chairs flying at him with nobody there to throw them.

Sergei had to dodge and duck to avoid being hit. He scrambled toward the stairs, hoping to find some sort of escape. He spun
